Announcement of the Office of the Commissioner for Volunteerism and NGOs on the support campaign for Lebanon

The Office of the Commissioner for Volunteerism and NGOs announces that on Friday, August 28, 2020, at the Pan-Cyprian Humanitarian Aid Coordination Centre the second phase of aid for the suffering people of Lebanon will begin, with the loading of containers το be transferred to the port. The whole campaign is coordinated by the Office of the Commissioner for Volunteerism and NGOs, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

All items from the other four collection points in Cyprus will be collected at the Humanitarian Aid Management Coordination Centre at the State Fair, with the significant support of the National Guard and the assistance of the Civil Defence. It is estimated that the volume of items collected by citizens, companies and businesses, Local Authorities, the Church, Non-Governmental and Voluntary Organizations and various other bodies, is more than 170 tons. This aid is in addition to the 70 tons already sent on transport vessel “IKARIA", and already distributed to the victims of the blast in Beirut.

The contribution of our Volunteers to the whole effort was significant, as they   undertook the receiving, sorting-out, and packaging of all donated items.

The success of the campaign has proven, one more time, the charity of our people. Cyprus, despite its small size, has collected 240 tons of humanitarian aid, surpassing aid sent to the people of Lebanon from much larger countries.

For live coverage of the events, and up-to-the-minute statements, we invite the Media to join us at the Humanitarian Aid Management Centre at the State Fair, on Friday, August 28, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
