Total employment in the Broad Public Sector in the 3^rd quarter of 2020 reached 68.502 persons. The employment in General Government was 62.750 and in the Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies 5.752 persons.

In General Government, which consists of the Government, Non-Profit Organizations and Local Authorities, total employment reached 52.234, 6.407 and 4.109 persons respectively.

The employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 1.169 persons (1,7%) compared to the same quarter of 2019. The employment in Central Government increased by 882 persons (1,5%) and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 382 persons (7,1%) whereas the employment in Local Authorities decreased by 95 persons (-2,3%).

Compared to the 2^nd quarter of 2020, the employment in the Broad Public Sector decreased by 981 persons (-1,4%). The employment in Central Government decreased by 950 persons (-1,6%) and in Local Authorities by 92 persons (-2,2%) whereas in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies the employment increased by 61 persons (1,1%).

Coverage

The employment in the Broad Public Sector includes employment in the General Government Sector and in the Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies. The General Government Sector includes the Central Government and the Local Authorities. The Local Authorities include Municipalities and other Local Authorities.

The Central Government includes the Government and Non-Profit Organizations. The Government includes the Civil Service, the Educational Service, the Police Service, the Fire Service, the hourly paid workers and military personnel. Non-Profit Organizations include School Committees, the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology, the Open University, the Cyprus Tourism Organization, the Cyprus Athletic Organization, the Cyprus Theatrical Organization, the Youth Organization, the Cyprus Institute of Energy, the Investment Promotion Foundation, the Symphony Orchestra Foundation, the Cyprus Cultural Foundation, the Cyprus Anti-Drugs Council, the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, the Cyprus Broad Casting Corporation, the Cyprus News Agency, the Cyprus Agricultural Payment Organization, the Cyprus Petroleum Company, the Agricultural Insurance Organization, the Central Agency of Equal Distribution of Burden, the Research Promotion Foundation, the Game and Fauna Service, the Human Resource Development Authority, the Office of the Commissioner of Electricity Communications and Postal Regulation, the Cyprus Radiotelevision Authority, the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority, the Pancyprian Refugees Union, the Cyprus Organization for Standardization, the Cyprus Asset Management Company Limited and the State Health Services Organization.

Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies include: the Cyprus Telecommunication Authority, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the Cyprus Port Authority, the Sewage Disposal Boards, the Water Boards, the Grain Commission, the Forest Industries, the Cyprus Stock Exchange, the Home Finance Organization, the Cyprus Potato Marketing Board, the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, the Cyprus Land Development Corporation, the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber, the Precious Metals Engraving Organization, the Council for the Registration and Control of Building Contractors, the Board for the Registration of the Real Estate Agencies, the Council of Commercial Agents, the Cyprus Certification Company and the Health Insurance Organization.

Collection of data

Data concerning employment in Government is provided by the Treasury and refers to the number of persons that were employed in the reference quarter while for the remaining sectors data is collected via a telephone survey each quarter from the Organizations.
