Employment in the Broad Public Sector: 3rd Quarter 2020

Total employment in the Broad Public Sector in the 3rd quarter of 2020 reached 68.502 persons. The employment in General Government was 62.750 and in the Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies 5.752 persons.

In General Government, which consists of the Government, Non-Profit Organizations and Local Authorities, total employment reached 52.234, 6.407 and 4.109 persons respectively.

The employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 1.169 persons (1,7%) compared to the same quarter of 2019. The employment in Central Government increased by 882 persons (1,5%) and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 382 persons (7,1%) whereas the employment in Local Authorities decreased by 95 persons (-2,3%).

 

Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020, the employment in the Broad Public Sector decreased by 981 persons (-1,4%). The employment in Central Government decreased by 950 persons (-1,6%) and in Local Authorities by 92 persons (-2,2%) whereas in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies the employment increased by 61 persons (1,1%).

Coverage

The employment in the Broad Public Sector includes employment in the General Government Sector and in the Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies. The General Government Sector includes the Central Government and the Local Authorities. The Local Authorities include Municipalities and other Local Authorities.

The Central Government includes the Government and Non-Profit Organizations. The Government includes the Civil Service, the Educational Service, the Police Service, the Fire Service, the hourly paid workers and military personnel. Collection of data

Data concerning employment in Government is provided by the Treasury and refers to the number of persons that were employed in the reference quarter while for the remaining sectors data is collected via a telephone survey each quarter from the Organizations.
