Inaugural Speech by the re-elected President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades

The Chief Returning Officer, Mr Kypros Kyprianou, declared tonight Mr Nicos Anastasiades as the President-elect of the Republic of Cyprus, who received 55.99% of the votes in the elections of the 4th of February 2018.

Addressing his supporters, at the Tassos Papadopoulos – Eleftheria stadium, President Nicos Anastasiades said:

“Fellow compatriots,

Dear friends,

I feel deeply moved and proud today and I also feel a lot of love towards the Cyprus people for my reelection. I am grateful to all Cypriot citizens for the trust they have shown in me. I would like to thank all Cypriot citizens who voted in the election, independent of whom they voted for, those who voted for me, but also those who didn't vote for me. Especially, I feel great gratitude towards all citizens who gave me the powerful mandate, a mandate to merge forces, all together as one for all.

I would like to stress that for me there are no political colors, and that all that was said during the pre-election campaign do not matter to me. All that matters as of tomorrow is how to work in order to face the problems of our youth, the vulnerable groups, the modernization of our country, to continue with the same determination and maintain the principles of democracy but also fight against corruption. We must continue all together and set as a priority to find a solution to the problem of occupation of our country, without ignoring the worries regarding the safety of Greek Cypriots and at the same time not ignoring the sensitivities the Turkish Cypriots may reasonably have.

Dear friends,

I would like to warmly thank first of all the Ministry of Interior, the Chief Returning Officer and everyone else who worked in this excellent electoral procedure. I thank the Police Force and everyone who worked in the elections in general.

At the same time, I would like to express my thanks to you all, and to all the citizens who honored me with their vote. I would like to thank the leader of my election campaign and President of the Democratic Rally, my colleague, Mr Averof Neophytou. I would like to thank the members of the Ministerial Council and all my partners at the Presidential Palace and the Presidency in general for all we have managed to achieve so far together with all other election forces.

I am aware that we still have much more to give and I know that we still have much more to do and that is why I insist in unity and wider cooperation.

I want to believe that after today's elections and today's result we shall all realize, and I do not question no-one's patriotism, that it is through cooperation that we shall achieve all that we owe to the Cyprus people.

I would like to thank the young people for the trust they have shown in me. Thank you all who are present here today and also everyone else.

Last but not least, I would like to thank all those who nominated me and supported me, from the wider civil society, the academics, the resistance fighters, the religious leaders and, in general, all those who put down their support signature for me and worked in a way that led to today's result.

Finally, I would like to thank my family, my wife Andrie, my daughters, sons-in-law and my dearest grandchildren for their tolerance all these years and for making me stronger. I also thank my mother, who despite her 94 years, it seems her wish came true.

In conclusion, I would like to express once more my deep gratitude towards the Cyprus people. I thank you. I love you. I owe you the best. May you are always blessed.”
