Registration οf Motor Vehicles: January – May 2021

The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January - May 2021.

In May 2021, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 2.863, recording a decrease of 7,8% compared to May 2020. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 5,8% to 2.137.

The main developments during the period January - May 2021 compared to the corresponding period of 2020 are summarised as follows:

(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 9,8% to 15.352 in January - May 2021, from 13.978 in January-May 2020.

(b) Passenger saloon cars increased to 11.785 from 10.905 in January - May 2020, recording a rise of 8,1%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 4.687 or 39,8% were new and 7.098 or 60,2% were used cars.

(c) Motor coaches and buses registered in January - May 2021 decreased to 26, from 36 in the same period of 2020.

(d) Goods conveyance vehicles recorded a decrease of 6,5% to 1.820 in January - May 2021, compared to 1.947 in January-May 2020. In particular, light goods vehicles decreased by 14,0% to 1.364, while heavy goods vehicles increased by 19,6% to 226, road tractors (units of trailers) by 50,8% to 98 and rental vehicles by 23,4% to 132.

(e) Mopeds < 50cc recorded an increase of 132,7% to 128 in January - May 2021, compared to 55 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

(f) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased to 1.421 in January - May 2021, compared to 907 in January - May 2020, recording an increase of 56,7%.

Methodological information

Scope and coverage

Data for the Registration of Motor Vehicles are collected on a monthly basis. They include the newly registered motor vehicles, as recorded by the Department of Road Transport.

The registrations are presented by category, make, energy type, new or used, engine cubic capacity, country of manufacture and other vehicle characteristics, based on the information maintained by the Motor Vehicles Registration and Licensing Authority of the Department of Road Transport.

Data collection

The collection of data is conducted by the Statistical Service, which receives the necessary data from the Department of Road Transport.

Definitions

“Road motor vehicle” means any road vehicle fitted with an engine whence it derives its sole means of propulsion, which is normally used for carrying persons or goods by road, namely:

-      Passengers’ cars saloon, which include private cars, taxis, rental cars, learners’ cars and invalid carriages

-      Motor coaches and buses, for private and public use

-      Goods conveyance vehicles, which include heavy and light goods conveyance vehicles and road tractors (units of trailers)

-      Mopeds and mechanised cycles, which include autocycles, motor tricycles, motorcycles and rental motorcycles

-      Tractors, for agriculture and non-agriculture use

-      Other vehicles, which include road rollers, mobile motor cranes, heavy locomotives and other vehicle for specific type and use.

Monthly Publication

The report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" is published on a monthly basis since 1982 and can be purchased at €6,50 per copy. It is also available free of charge in electronic form on the website of the Statistical Service.
