The Minister of Foreign Affairs departs for Slovenia to take part in the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (2-3/9) and the Bled Strategic Forum 2021 (2/9)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, travels to Slovenia tomorrow morning to participate in the informal meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, known as ‘Gymnich’. While in Slovenia, Mr Christodoulides, will also take part, as an invited speaker, in the Bled Strategic Forum 2021.

During the Gymnich meeting, which starts on Thursday evening and will continue on Friday in Brdo pri Kranju, EU Foreign Ministers will discuss the situation in Afghanistan, in the wake of recent dramatic developments, and its implications for regional security and stability. They are also expected to exchange views on the EU’s relations with the Gulf countries, as well as with China.

In the course of the meeting and pursuant to the relevant Declaration of the European Union of 27 July, Minister Christodoulides will brief his counterparts from EU Member States on the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus question, with particular emphasis on the illegal activities of Turkey in the fenced area of Varosha.

On Friday, the participating Foreign Ministers will attend a working lunch hosted by the Slovenian Foreign Minister, Mr Anže Logar, whose country currently holds the rotating Presidency of the EU Council, with the participation of the Indian Foreign Minister, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

On Thursday afternoon, Mr Christodoulides will participate in a panel discussion entitled “Mediterranean: A Geostrategic Chessboard”, to be held in the framework of the Bled Strategic Forum which takes place annually in the Slovenian town with the same name.
