The Statistical Service announces the publication of the report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for the period January-October 2021.

In October 2021, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 2.646, recording a decrease of 16,6% compared to October 2020. Passenger saloon cars registered a fall of 21,1% to 2.005.

The main developments during the period January-October 2021 compared to the corresponding period of 2020 are summarised as follows:

(a) The total registrations of motor vehicles decreased by 6,0% to 30.345 in January-October 2021, from 32.277 in January-October 2020.

(b) Passenger saloon cars decreased to 23.341 from 24.987 in January-October 2020, recording a fall of 6,6%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 9.390 or 40,2% were new and 13.951 or 59,8% were used cars.

(c) Motor coaches and buses registered in January-October 2021 decreased to 48, from 280 in the same period of 2020.

(d) Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 13,7% to 3.440 in January-October 2021, compared to 3.986 in January-October 2020. In particular, light goods vehicles decreased by 17,4% to 2.593 and heavy goods vehicles by 14,0% to 399, while road tractors (units of trailers) increased by 8,2% to 159 and rental vehicles by 22,5% to 289.

(e) Mopeds < 50cc recorded an increase of 38,2% to 228 in January-October 2021, compared to 165 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

(f) Mechanised cycles > 50cc increased to 2.941 in January-October 2021, compared to 2.502 in January-October 2020, recording an increase of 17,5%.

Methodological Information

Scope and coverage

Data for the Registration of Motor Vehicles are collected on a monthly basis. They include the newly registered motor vehicles, as recorded by the Department of Road Transport.

The registrations are presented by category, make, energy type, new or used, engine cubic capacity, country of manufacture and other vehicle characteristics, based on the information maintained by the Motor Vehicles Registration and Licensing Authority of the Department of Road Transport.

Data collection

The collection of data is conducted by the Statistical Service, which receives the necessary data from the Department of Road Transport.

Definitions

“Road motor vehicle” means any road vehicle fitted with an engine whence it derives its sole means of propulsion, which is normally used for carrying persons or goods by road, namely:

Passengers’ cars saloon, which include private cars, taxis, rental cars, learners’ cars and invalid carriages

Motor coaches and buses, for private and public use

Goods conveyance vehicles, which include heavy and light goods conveyance vehicles and road tractors (units of trailers)

Mopeds and mechanised cycles, which include autocycles, motor tricycles, motorcycles and rental motorcycles

Tractors, for agriculture and non-agriculture use

Other vehicles, which include road rollers, mobile motor cranes, heavy locomotives and other vehicle for specific type and use.

Monthly Publication

The report entitled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" is published on a monthly basis since 1982 and can be purchased at €10,00 per copy. It is also available free of charge in electronic form on the website of the Statistical Service.
