Presentation of Credentials of the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in Canada

The new High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in Canada, Mr Vassilis Philippou, presented his credentials on 29 June 2018 to the Right Honourable Governor General of Canada, Ms Julie Payette.

Presenting his credentials, Mr Philippou conveyed to the Governor General of Canada the warm greetings and wishes of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nicos Anastasiades and the Cypriot people.

In a private meeting, the High Commissioner, expressed his gratitude to the Governor General and the Government of Canada for their committed and steadfast support on the Cyprus problem, and updated her on the current phase of the negotations. He also pledged to work to strengthen the relations between the two countries. During the meeting, Mr Philippou and Ms Payette reviewed the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Canada, with specific reference to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in the health sector, and explored ways of further co-operation in the areas of tourism, education, culture and shipping. In concluding, the High Commissioner conveyed  the appreciation of the Govenrment and the people of Cyprus to Canada for the country´s  contribution to UNFICYP.

The Governor General of Canada, Ms Payette, referred to the excellent ties between the two countries and expressed her appreciation to the President of the Republic. She also referred to the participation of the Canadian contingent in UNFICYP since 1964, and renewed Canada's steady support and firm solidarity to the cause of finding a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem.
