Written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Mr Andreas Iosif

Monday, 9 May, 2022 marks a historic day for the residents and owners of property within the territory of the British Sovereign Base Areas, as the start of the implementation of the Agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Kingdom on the Non-Military Development of the British Sovereign Base Areas will be announced, at the Presidential Palace at 9 a.m.

The Agreement was signed on 15 January 2014 between President Anastasiades and the former UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

The implementation of the agreement opens up significant prospects for economic, tourism, commercial development in municipalities and communities that fall within the British Sovereign Base Areas.  

On the same day, a meeting on the prevention of fires will take place at the Presidential Palace at 6:30 in the afternoon. The Ministers of Finance, Interior, Defence, Justice, Agriculture, the Chief of Police, the Chief of the National Guard and the Head of Fire Service will participate, among others.

The measures taken by the Republic to prevent fires will be assessed at the meeting, while the level of readiness of the Services, the needs that exist and the state of implementation of the measures taken to prevent and suppress fires will also be discussed.

It is recalled that in the coming years Cyprus will raise through the plan “Cyprus — Tomorrow” significant funds for protection against fires, which exceed 18 million euros, without taking into account what is included in the state budget.

On Tuesday, 10 May, at 9 a.m., the Council of Ministers will have a meeting at the Presidential Palace.

At 8.30 p.m. on the same day, President Anastasiades will host a dinner in honour of the Croatian Prime Minister, Mr Andrej Plenkovic, who will pay an official visit to Cyprus.

On Wednesday, 11 May, in the morning, the official welcome ceremony of the Prime Minister of Croatia will take place at the Presidential Palace. A tête-à-tête meeting will follow between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of Croatia, as well as extended consultations, during which the excellent level of bilateral relations between the two countries is expected to be reaffirmed. They will also have the opportunity to discuss issues of European interest, the developments in Ukraine, the EU energy security, the migration issue and they will exchange views on regional issues of common interest, including developments in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region and the Western Balkans. The President of the Republic will also brief on the current situation in the Cyprus problem, his initiatives for the resumption of the talks and Turkey’s intransigent positions.

In the afternoon of the same day, President Anastasiades will lay the foundation stone of the “Nikos K. Siakolas Medical School and Health Science Building”, of the University of Cyprus.

On Thursday, 12 May, at 11.30 a.m., President Anastasiades will hold a press conference during which he will analyse reforms, policies and development projects, of a total budget of more than 315 million euros which have been planned by the government in the framework of the “Cyprus — Tomorrow” plan in the field of “Welfare State — Society without exclusions”. He will also inform about the work produced based on his election pledges.

On Friday, 13 May, at 10:15 in the morning, he will attend the Presentation of “Welfare State — Society without exclusions” that concerns the government’s benefits’ policy. The presentation will be made by the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance and the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, at the Presidential Palace.

At 11:45 a.m. on the same day, he will have a meeting, at the Presidential Palace, with the former President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Prokopis Pavlopoulos, who will visit Cyprus, to attend the event in memory of the former President of the House of Representatives, Vassos Lyssarides.

At 7:30 in the evening of the 13th of May, President Anastasiades will address the event in memory of the former President of the House of Representatives, Vasos Lyssaridis.

On Saturday, 14 May, at 11 a.m., the President of the Republic will inaugurate the wing of Overseas Greeks, at the EOKA Fighters Melathron, in Palodia village. During the event, President Anastasiades will be honoured for his interest in and his long-term support for the Foundation.
