Remarks by the President of the Republic on the Cyprus problem
I hope Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots change attitude so that we can achieve a viable, functional solution, worthy of the principles, the beliefs and the acquis communautaire of the European Union of which we are a member state, the President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades said today.
In his remarks to reporters, after the memorial service for those who fell during the 1974 coup in Cyprus, and in response to a question, the President of the Republic said that “our positions on the Cyprus problem are well known. The efforts of the Governments of the Republic of Cyprus every time have been to find a peaceful, viable solution. The basis has been agreed upon.
The reason for the continuation of an unacceptable status quo is solely the lack of political will by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots.
I hope they will change attitude so that we can achieve a viable, functional solution, worthy of the principles, the beliefs and the acquis communautaire of the European Union of which we are a member state.”
Invited to comment on the letter addressed to the UN by the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, the President of the Republic said that “I am not going to answer at any claims," adding that "whatever we have to say, we will say to (UN SG special envoy) Mrs Lute, as we have repeatedly submitted to the UN Secretary General.”
