The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland presented her credentials
The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland, Ms Charis Christodoulidou, presented her Letters of Credence to the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins at a ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin on September 4, 2018.
During the ceremony the Ambassador brought greetings from HE Nicos Anastasiades President of the Republic of Cyprus to President Higgins, while assuring that she will work towards further strengthening the - already excellent -relations between Cyprus and Ireland, both at a bilateral level, but also within the European Union, the United Nations and other international organizations.
During a private meeting with President Higgins, Ms Christodoulidou expressed the gratitude of the Government and the people of Cyprus for the principled stance of Ireland with regard to the Cyprus issue and for the participation of almost 10.000 Irish personnel in UNFICYP since 1964.
The Ambassador reiterated the commitment of President Anastasiades to resuming negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, in accordance with international law, UNSC Resolutions on Cyprus and the EU acquis.
The President of Ireland referred to the strong ties between Cyprus and Ireland, which are based on shared values and principles. He reiterated his support to a just and viable solution of the Cyprus issue and expressed his hope for the resumption of the talks and their successful conclusion. He emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and thanked Cyprus for its support to the Irish candidature for the position of non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2021-2022).
