Risk of forest fires on 15th August at a "Red Alert" level
The Forestry Department informs the public that, due to the mass visits to the forests for the celebration of the 15th of August, the risk of forest fire eruption and expansion for tomorrow, Tuesday, August 15, 2023, remains at the "Red Alert" level.
A warm appeal is made to the public, who will be visiting forest areas, to pay special attention, completely avoid actions and activities that could potentially cause a fire, i.e. avoid the lighting of fires, using power tools that produce sparks or flames, and throwing cigarette butts and lit matches. Lighting a fire to prepare food is permitted only in designated areas within picknick sites.
It is emphasised that it is prohibited to light a fire without permission and that this constitutes an offence which, according to the Forestry Law of 2012, is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years or by a fine of up to €50,000.00 or both penalties together and in accordance with the Prevention of Rural Fires Law of 1988, up to five years or a fine of up to €20,000 or both penalties together.
Finally, anyone noticing smoke or fire is kindly asked to call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Service) immediately.
