The Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Slovakia presented his credentials

The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Slovakia, Mr Michael Karagiorgis, presented his credentials to the President of the Slovak Republic, Mrs Zuzana Caputová, during an official ceremony held yesterday 15 August 2023, at the Presidential Palace, in Bratislava.

In the meeting that followed with President Caputová, Ambassador Karagiorgis conveyed the cordial greetings of the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides. He also expressed the commitment of the Government to further enhance the excellent relations between the two countries on a bilateral level, but also within the European Union and at the level of international organisations.

Ambassador Karagiorgis expressed the gratitude of the Republic of Cyprus for the long-term and most valuable contribution of Slovakia to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, through the Slovak Contingent. He also underlined the importance of Slovakia’s initiative in facilitating regular meetings between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties. The Ambassador referred to the challenges Cyprus faces due to the continuing illegal occupation of part of its territory by Turkey and briefed the President regarding the initiative of President Christodoulides for the resumption of negotiations for the solution to the Cyprus Question.

The President of the Slovak Republic reciprocated the warm greetings of President Christodoulides and wished for the peaceful reunification of Cyprus the soonest possible.  President Čaputová also referred to the ever-closer bilateral ties between the two countries, noting the progress already achieved in fields like tourism, start-ups, and new technologies. The President expressed her interest for further enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation, particularly in the fields of investments and green transition.
