The Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States of America presented his credentials

The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States of America, Mr Evangelos Savva, presented his credentials to the US President Joseph R. Biden, during an official ceremony held on 15 September 2023, in the White House.

During the presentation of his credentials Ambassador Savva conveyed to President Biden the warm greetings of the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, and paid tribute to the high level of Cyprus - US relations, as they have developed in recent years in areas such as those of security and defence, energy, technology and sciences, cultural heritage, as well as at the level of civil society. He further pointed out that the bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and the USA aims at the promotion of regional stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.

With regards to the Cyprus Question, Ambassador Savva referred to the initiative of President Christodoulides for the resumption of negotiations with the aim of reaching a just and viable solution, and thanked President Biden both for the US support for this initiative, but also for the commitment towards the solution of the Cyprus Question, on the basis of the agreed framework as set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

In conclusion, Ambassador Savva underlined the determination of the President of the Republic and his Government towards further substantial strengthening of Cyprus - US bilateral relations, with the aim of consolidating a strategic partnership.

In his written remarks, President Biden characterized as historic the progress achieved in the bilateral relations with the Republic of Cyprus, and referred to the personal friendship that connects him with Cyprus. At the same time, he noted with satisfaction the fact that the two countries wish to jointly take advantage of emerging opportunities for close cooperation on several issues.

Regarding the Cyprus Question, President Biden reaffirmed the strong commitment of his country to the goal of reaching a comprehensive solution on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, which will lead to the reunification of Cyprus.
