Signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of the Republic of Cyprus and the Arab Republic of Egypt on the employment of Egyptian workers in Cyprus
In the framework of his two-day working visit (4-5 June) to Egypt, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Constantinos Kombos, signed today with his Egyptian counterpart, Mr Sameh Shoukry, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of the Republic of Cyprus and the Arab Republic of Egypt on the employment of Egyptian workers in Cyprus. The aim of the Memorandum is to facilitate and regulate the entry and residence of Egyptian citizens in Cyprus for employment in various sectors, depending on the needs of the Cypriot market and the Government's relevant policy.
The Memorandum will allow access to Cyprus’ labour market by Egyptian citizens in a structured, gradual and controlled manner, within an agreed institutional framework.
The signing of the Memorandum was completed within four months, underscoring the political volition of the two Ministries to further enhance the bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, for a mutually beneficial economic relationship.
A Joint Committee, under the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanks for the close cooperation, will oversee the implementation of the Memorandum, evaluating its effectiveness and proposing any necessary amendments. In this context, it is noted that the first year will serve as a pilot phase for assessing the procedures and monitoring the implementation of the Memorandum.
The Memorandum of Understanding includes provisions regarding social security, the transfer of legal renumeration and confidentiality.
