Reply by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Νikos Christodoulides, on the occasion of the presentation of credentials by the new Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Cyprus, H.E. Mr Nikolay Zhumakanov

Your Excellency,

It is my great honour to welcome you to Cyprus and to receive the letters of credence appointing you as the first-ever resident Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Cyprus. This is admittedly a historic milestone in the constantly evolving and far-reaching nature of our bilateral relations. First and foremost, I wish to extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes for continued success in the fulfilment of your high duties. In addition, I wish to reiterate my Government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening and enhancing our bilateral ties across all areas of cooperation.

Your Excellency,

We are particularly pleased that Cyprus and Kazakhstan have developed a close relationship in recent years, grounded in shared values and the mutual commitment to international legality and peace. I avail myself of this opportunity to also acknowledge the significant progress we have achieved in strengthening our bilateral cooperation across various fields and sectors, such as economic, business, and trade ties. I am convinced that this progress reflects the shared dedication of our countries to continue building a tangible and results-oriented cooperation. In this regard, the establishment of resident embassies in Lefkosia and Astana in 2025 constitutes a landmark decision, one that evidently showcases our solid political will for elevating the relations between our two countries.

As we move forward, I assure you that I remain fully committed to identifying new areas of cooperation, as well as to enhancing the institutional framework between Cyprus and Kazakhstan, ensuring that our collaboration continues to thrive in the years to come. In this framework, and following a frequent exchange of meetings, particularly between the Foreign Ministers of our countries, it is high time for the exchange of presidential visits to both Lefkosia and Astana in the near future.

On the European Union (EU)-Kazakhstan relations front, Cyprus is fully prepared to further them, particularly in light of our upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.

Your Excellency,

Last July marked the 50th anniversary since Turkey’s 1974 illegal invasion of Cyprus and the ongoing military occupation of almost 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. In this regard, I wish to express my gratitude for Kazakhstan’s unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. The Government of the Republic of Cyprus remains deeply committed to a comprehensive and viable solution firmly anchored on the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions, and fully in line with EU law. We therefore continue to exert all efforts to resume negotiations, with a view to ending the Turkish occupation and to reunifying Cyprus and its people.

Your Excellency,

In concluding, please convey to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as well as to the people of Kazakhstan our heartfelt greetings and a message of sincere friendship and solidarity.

I sincerely hope that your tenure will be both productive and successful, fostering the further growth of the cordial and forward-looking ties between Cyprus and Kazakhstan. Ambassador Zhumakanov, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus.
