Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Poland were held in Lefkosia
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Minas A. Hadjimichael, welcomed in Lefkosia, today, for political consultations, the State Secretary at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk.
The two officals expressed their common desire to further strengthen and deepen bilateral relations between the two countries. The Permanent Secretary acknowledged Poland's historical contribution to the field of archeology in Cyprus and referred, in particular, to the excavations undertaken since 1965 in the Pafos area.
The meeting highlighted the excellent cooperation between the two countries in the framework of the EU's Presidency trio in 2011-12 and recognised prospects for the further enhancement of cooperation and coordination within the EU. European and regional issues of common interest were alao discussed, including EU-Turkey relations, the situation of the energy sector in the EU, the exploration program of Cyprus, and security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Permanent Secretary informed about the latest developments concerning the Government's efforts aimed at the resumption of talks to resolve the Cyprus problem. He referred to the importance that the Republic of Cyprus attaches to the role of Poland as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and called for the country's support in ensuring the presence of the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus for as long as the Turkish occupation continues.
Prior to the consultations, State Secretary Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk was received for a courtesy call by Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides.
