Transport Statistics 2016

The Statistical Service announces the publication of the annual report «Transport Statistics» for the year 2016.

The report provides detailed information on the economic developments in the transport sector, as well as data on the registration of motor vehicles by type and category, road accidents, shipping and aviation activities, transportation of goods and passengers and postal services.

The main developments can be summarized as follows:

(a)  The transport and storage sector registered in 2015 an increase of 7,6% in the production value which amounted to €2.441,9 million, compared to €2.268,9 million in 2014.

The value added of the sector increased by 1,4% to €705,8 million in 2015, compared to €696,2 million in 2014.

(b)  The total registrations of motor vehicles during 2016 increased by 31,4%, reaching 33.805, compared to 25.735 in 2015. Passenger saloon cars increased by 30,3% to 27.956 in 2016, compared to 21.462 in 2015.

The vehicles of all types and categories on the register of the Road Transport Department at the end of 2016 totaled 800.790, compared to 781.843 at the end of 2015.

(c)  The number of road accidents reported to the police decreased to 942 in 2016 compared to 958 in 2015. Human casualties in road accidents were 46 persons killed and 964 persons injured in 2016, as against 57 killed and 947 injured in 2015.

(d)  During 2016, 2.923 vessels called at the various ports of Cyprus compared to 2.890 in 2015. Of these, 1.758 arrived at Lemesos port, 677 called at Larnaka port and the remaining 488 at the other ports.

At the end of 2016, there were 1.663 ships on the Cyprus Register with a total of 23.143.016 gross registered tonnage, as against 1.862 ships in 2010 and 2.728 ships in 2000.

(e)   Civil aircraft landings during 2016 increased to 34.692 compared to 28.839 in 2015. Passenger arrivals through airports increased to 4.581.081 in 2016, compared to 3.891.669 in 2015.

(f)   A total of 47,2 million letters and postcards were received by postal services during 2016, compared to 48,0 million in 2015.
