The verdict of our compatriots to elect Mr Ersin Tatar as the new leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community is fully respected.

I would like to congratulate Mr Ersin Tatar. I am looking forward to a tête-à-tête meeting, as soon as possible.

I would like to assure both Mr Tatar and my Turkish-Cypriot compatriots, of my readiness and decisiveness to respond promptly to the intention expressed by the UN Secretary General to undertake, as soon as possible, a new initiative for a solution to the Cyprus problem based upon the resolutions adopted by the United Nations, the decisions taken by the Security Council and the principles and values of the EU, of which Cyprus is and will continue to be a member.

I sincerely hope that Mr Tatar will demonstrate the same determination.
