Welcome speech by the Minister of Finance, Mr Makis Keravnos, at the EIB Group local office inauguration ceremony
It is a great pleasure to welcome you all here in the Ministry of Finance, to celebrate the opening of the new European Investment Bank (EIB) office, in Nicosia, the capital of the European Union (EU) member state that is located at the very edge of Europe, far away from all European Institutions. This is a significant moment for both Cyprus and the broader EU, and I am delighted to mark this milestone with all of you.
The presence of the EIB in Cyprus is not only a symbol of the growing relationship between our island and the EU, but also a testament to the importance of collaboration, investment, and sustainable development across Europe. The opening of a new local EIB office in Cyprus is a clear signal of EIB’s profound commitment in our country.
As a member state of the EU, Cyprus has long been committed to the EU's economic goals. Today, we stand at the crossroads of a major transformation. The challenges we face –whether in terms of the energy transition, digitalisation, or the modernisation of our public and private sectors– demand bold action and strategic investments. It is clear that the road to recovery and long-term sustainable growth can only be paved with the support of institutions like the EIB.
The EIB’s mission of supporting both public and private investment, enhancing the quality of life through job creation, and driving innovation perfectly aligns with our own national priorities. This new office will facilitate closer collaboration between the EIB and Cypriot authorities, businesses, and other stakeholders to help accelerate key initiatives that are essential to our economic development.
Cyprus, EIB’s largest beneficiary for many years, is already benefiting from significant EIB funding in key areas. With the opening of this office, we anticipate even more efficient coordination and enhanced support for Cyprus' investment needs, especially in light of the Green Deal, the digital transformation agenda and the governmental efforts to improve the daily life of the citizens and ensure a strong and resilient economy.
I would like to express my gratitude to the EIB and to Mrs Calviño personally, for their continued support, and for choosing Nicosia as the site for their new office.
I look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on our economy, our businesses, and our people. I am confident that the work done here, will contribute to a more prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive future for Cyprus and Europe as a whole.
In closing, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to all those involved in the establishment of this new office express my confidence that this long and fruitful partnership will bring lasting benefits to Cyprus, the EU, and beyond.
Dear Nadia,
I would like to assure you, that Cyprus appreciates the work done by the EIB, and I am sure that under your leadership and the new strategic policy priorities you have set, a new era begins for EIB and for Europe.
Please be assured that we are fully committed to advancing these shared targets.
Thank you.
