Completion of the 9th UNECE Ministerial Conference on the Environment for Europe
The 9th UNECE Ministerial Conference on the Environment for Europe, which was held at the Filoxenia Conference Center in Lefkosia, on 5-7 October 2022, was completed today, 7 October 2022.
The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr Costas Kadis, made a closing statement, on behalf of the Cyprus Government, as follows:
“Before concluding, I would like once again to stress out our deep satisfaction towards the outcomes of this Conference and especially the Nicosia Declaration. I personally would like to thank all delegations for their valuable contribution. It has been a long and difficult process, but the outcome is ambitious and will continue to guide us forward towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.
Equally important is the evaluation of the state of affairs in the pan-european region and the available policy options, including multi-lateral environmental agreements and public-private partnerships. Exchanging good practices and actively engaging civil society, that go beyond the existing commitments, can play a vital role towards transforming the planet.
We strongly support the reference made towards the unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine by Russian Federation and we urge countries to work together for the advancement of a sustainable recovery of the country.
Cyprus is committed to capitalize on the results of this Conference and stresses out the important role of the Environment for Europe process bringing together all stakeholders for a sustainable future.”
The UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Ms Olga Algayerova, made a closing statement on behalf of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). For Ms Algayerova’s closing statement, press here.
