Address by the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, at the Gala Dinner on the 10th anniversary of the International Multithematic Bio-Medical Congress «Scientific Cyprus»
It is a great honour and a pleasure to welcome you at the Presidential Palace for the Gala Dinner held on the occasion of the International Multithematic Bio-Medical Congress “Biomedical Scientific Cyprus”.
The fact that this International Medical Multithematic Conference, the IMBMC Congress, takes place for the 10th consecutive year, with the participation of renowned doctors and scientists from all over the world, manifests that it has been firmly established as an internationally reputable Congress in the field of Medical Science.
And I have no doubt that during the interventions and discussions held today and which are to continue during the next two days, our medical community will receive insightful knowledge on medical and health related issues, such as, amongst others, cancer, neurology, cardiology, diabetes and molecular medicine.
And it is for this exact reason that I wish to praise the European University of Cyprus’ pursuit of academic and research excellence, with the annual Times Higher Education ranking it among the world’s top 201+ universities as regards policies and practices implemented in the fields of teaching, research, entrepreneurship and the transfer of knowledge to society.
How can we not feel proud when the European University has invested tens of millions of euros in the state-of-the-art facilities at its Medical School, providing clinical training at the major public and private hospitals and attracting academics and students of the highest caliber from European and third countries?
How can we not feel proud when the success and international expansion and reputation of the University has led to the opening of a medical campus in Frankfurt, the first campus of a Cypriot university outside our country?
Dear Dr Hadjikyprianou, please accept the sincere gratitude and congratulations of the Government and the people of Cyprus for your contribution to education, to innovation, to research and development.
What is equally important is the fact that the University’s policies and actions actively compliment the Government’s efforts to establish Cyprus as a regional educational, research and excellence centre.
And I am glad to attest that our efforts are bearing fruits if one considers that in 2013 only eight thousand EU and third-country nationals had chosen Cyprus for studies, whilst now they are over 35 thousand.
I once more welcome to Cyprus the distinguished professors, doctors and scientists from abroad who share the wealth of their knowledge and expertise, as well as their ideas and thoughts on current health issues and to this end I have no doubt that the Congress will prove to be successful and fruitful.
