Announcement by the Presidency of the Republic on the passing of Kofi Annan
We express our sorrow for the death of Kofi Annan, who served for a decade as Secretary General of the United Nations, and extend our condolences to his family and the United Nations.
Honored with the 2001 Nobel Prize for Peace along with the UN, Kofi Annan was the first UN Secretary General to come from the administrative structure of the organization, and left his mark, in particular, with regard to the fight against poverty in Africa and AIDS.
In spite of the fact that his efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the plan that bore his name did not succeed, he has linked his name with the problem of occupied Cyprus.
Today, 12 years following the end of his term in office, and 44 years after the Turkish invasion and the occupation of part of the Republic of Cyprus, the problem still remains unsolved; and this fact makes it imperative to intensify our efforts, in cooperation with the UN, in order for the decisions and the resolutions of the international organization on Cyprus to be implemented, along with the principles of the EU, through a comprehensive agreement on the basis of the process and the parameters set by the current UN Secretary General.
