Statement by the President of the Republic to foreign journalists before today’s European Council meeting in Brussels

The President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, made a statement to foreign journalists today, before the beginning of the deliberations of the second day of the European Council in Brussels.

The President stated: “I want to say that coming from a country that is a frontline country regarding migration, it was a pity that we did not reach an agreement last night. Let us hope that today we will reach an agreement, that we will have common conclusions. Migration is a common problem and we need to show in action what we say about solidarity. I hope that today's discussions are going to be much better”.

When asked about the reaction of certain member states during yesterday’s discussion on the issue of migration, Mr Christodoulides stated: “Let us see what is going to happen today. I do not want to prejudge the discussions. We are going to discuss this issue this morning before anything else, and I hope that we will reach an agreement. It is a very crucial issue. Our citizens are expecting a common position from all 27. It is a European issue, it touches on our sovereignty, it touches on our unity, which is the most important characteristic of the European Union. Let us hope that we will have an agreement. Thanks”.
