Address by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou, at the Opening Ceremony of the Nicosia Book Fest 2023
It is with great pleasure that I stand here today at the Nicosia Book Fest 2023, with China as the Guest Country of Honour. Cyprus and China have traditionally maintained strong diplomatic and cultural ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 52 years ago. The celebration of landmark events such as the Nicosia Book Fest serve as a testament of our two countries’ long-standing collaboration, bearing witness to our enduring diplomatic and cultural relations.
This year marks the 8th edition of the Nicosia Book Fest, an important and successful event that has been organised annually since 2016, which is now been established as an institution that promotes books and the worlds of literature and knowledge, and inspire a love of reading to audiences in Cyprus of all ages.
In a time when book industry faces unprecedented challenges, it's more crucial than ever to uphold the values of freedom of expression and the unifying power of books. As it's often said, books are indeed a person's best companion and hold an invaluable place in our lives.
Moreover, books are storehouse of knowledge and gateways to endless information. Reading opens up new horizons, enriches our thinking, our capabilities and enhances our reasoning abilities. While exalting the importance of books and reading, it is of equal importance to highlight the pivotal role played by intermediaries who promote literature, books and the book industry in general.
In this regard, I would like to thank and congratulate ‘The Prometheus Research Institute’, which is the main organiser and the driving force of this festival. The 8th Nicosia Book Festival showcases numerous stands featuring publishers, bookshops, associations, universities, libraries, as well as various activities for children, including crafts and sports. It's heartening to witness the dynamic presence of all the above key stakeholders, a testament to the resounding success of Nicosia Book Festival.
The Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus recognizes and supports the holding of such activities. These endeavors not only enhance international co-operation and promote mutual understanding, but also foster artistic and cultural diversity, both on the global stage and within our own borders. We firmly believe that by embracing these shared values, we can fortify our bonds, not only with the international community but also among our own citizens, creating a harmonious and enriched society for all.
Before I conclude this address, I would like to turn again to the Guest Country of honour and to congratulate the People’s Republic of China for its significant presence in the 8th Edition of the Nicosia Book Fest. My gratitude goes out to both the Prometheus Research Institute and the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus for their tireless efforts in making this collaboration a reality. I also wish to underline the importance of the visit of His Excellency, Mr. Jianchun Zhang as head of a numerous official delegation from the People’s Republic of China especially for attending the Book Festival as well as other cultural events that honor China and its rich history and culture.
Last but certainly not least, I want to express my appreciation to all authors, publishers, universities and most importantly, to each person here today contributing to this wonderful festival dedicated to the world of books. I extend my best wishes to everyone participating in the Nicosia Book Fest.
