Address by the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the ceremony for receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, Mr Marek Szczepanowski
Your Excellency,
It is with distinct pleasure that I receive today your Letters of Credence appointing you as the new Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Cyprus, as well as the Letters of Recall of your distinguished predecessor. As the new Ambassador of Poland that is a most valuable friend of Cyprus, may I assure you that my Government and the people of Cyprus will provide you with every assistance in the performance of your high duties that lie ahead. May I add, that my government’s priority is to work for the reinforcement and enhancement of our bilateral relations in all spheres of cooperation, so that our traditional ties of friendship may further flourish.
Your Excellency,
Ties between Cyprus and Poland can be traced back to at least the Middle Ages. Through the centuries, Cypriots and Poles have strengthened these ties, and the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries, paved the way to institutionalize the relationship and elevate it to new, unprecedented levels, as is nowadays reflected at the political, economic and cultural level and, most importantly perhaps, at the level of people-to-people contacts.
Our countries’ paths, have crossed in recent times in significant and meaningful ways. Having joined the European Union together in 2004, and having also shared responsibility for successive EU Presidencies as members of the same Trio in 2012, Cyprus and Poland have been collaborating closer than ever before on the international arena, sharing a common concern and interest in the affairs of our Continent.
I wish to reiterate my personal commitment to deepen and expand the existing bonds of friendship and cooperation. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between our Foreign Ministries in 2021, has contributed to the further development and strengthening of the traditional relations of friendship. On this note, following my positive reply to the invitation extended by the President Duda, I look forward to visiting officially your country. I am certain, that the visit will give a boost to intensifying bilateral cooperation in all spheres of mutual interest, as well as expanding the institutional framework of our relations.
Your Excellency,
It would also be an omission not to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude of your country’s support during these extremely challenging times, as well as your principled stance towards our efforts for the reunification of Cyprus, on the basis of the relevant UNSC Resolutions, international law and the EU principles and values.
Regarding the Cyprus Question we remain steadfast in our commitment to break the stalemate and resume negotiations from where they were left off at Crans Montana. On the basis of my initiative, we are making every effort to this direction, with a view to ending the Turkish military occupation and reunifying Cyprus on the basis of the relevant UNSC Resolutions.
Your Excellency,
In welcoming you to Cyprus, I would kindly request that you convey to President Duda and Prime Minister Morawiecki as well as to the amicable people of the Republic of Poland our warmest greetings and a message of sincere friendship and solidarity.
I conclude by extending my heartfelt wishes and by assuring you once more of the firm support of my Government and me personally to your valuable mission, so that your tenure will be highly constructive and fruitful, and carried out in such a way that the strong, long-lasting relationship that Cyprus enjoys with Poland, will become even closer.
Ambassador, Szczepanowski, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus.
