The Ambassador of Cyprus to Spain presented his credentials

The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Kingdom of Spain, Mr Michalis Ioannou, presented, on 11 November 2024, his credentials to H.M. King Felipe VI.

In the meeting that followed with the Spanish Monarch, Ambassador Ioannou conveyed the warm greetings of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides. He also conveyed the solidarity and sincere condolences of the Government and the people of Cyprus for the recent deadly floods that devastated Valencia and other areas of Spain.

Ambassador Ioannou thanked King Felipe for Spain's principled stance on the Cyprus question and briefed him on the latest developments and President Christodoulides’ efforts for the resumption of negotiations. In this respect, he underlined President Christodoulides’ commitment for a return to the negotiating table as soon as possible, with the aim of reaching a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as provided by the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and in full respect of International Law.

During the meeting, Ambassador Ioannou had the opportunity to have a wide-ranging discussion on Cyprus-Spain bilateral relations and the prospects for further strengthening them. He also exchanged views on international and regional issues with King Felipe, taking into account the common challenges faced by the two countries due to their geographical positions and their membership of the European Union.
