Address by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the ceremony for receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia, Ms Suzana Bošković-Prodanović

Your Excellency,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Cyprus and receive your Letters of Credence by which you are appointed as the new Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Republic of Cyprus. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations and to wish you every success in the performance of your duties, as well as to assure you that we will diligently assist you in carrying them out.

Your Excellency,

The people and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus are deeply grateful for the old-age and deep-rooted relationship between Cyprus and Serbia. I firmly believe that it constitutes a prime example of how historical, cultural, and religious ties can transcend geographical distance. Rooted in a shared past and bolstered by mutual support, our bilateral relations exemplify the enduring nature of true friendship between our two countries.

We are also dedicated to strengthening even further our ties for the mutual benefit of our peoples. Our primary focus is expanding our cooperation by reinforcing the bilateral institutional foundation. Our two countries have been working closely together to further enhance their bilateral relations in an array of sectors, such as defence, economy and tourism.

Cyprus and Serbia enjoy and maintain a high level of cooperation, strong ties, and mutual support within international organizations, such as the UN and the Council of Europe. We are eager to see this cooperation further developed and expanded.

Your Excellency,

The relationship between Serbia and Cyprus is rooted in our shared commitment to the principles of respect to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. Cyprus continues to endure the tragic consequences of the illegal Turkish invasion of 1974 and the occupation of more than one-third of its territory.

I would like to express my deep appreciation for Serbia’s principled stance on the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. I wish to reaffirm our commitment to a solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, as outlined in the relevant UNSC Resolutions. Achieving a solution on this basis is crucial for Cyprus and all its citizens, as well as for all parties involved in the Cyprus issue and international actors with vital interests in the security and stability of the Eastern Mediterranean, including the EU.

At this point, I would also like to reiterate Cyprus’ consistent and firm support of Serbia’s position on Kosovo and applaud Serbia’s constructive engagement in the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, as well as its commitment and dedication to finding a durable solution to the Kosovo question. At the same time, I would like to express concern about the decisions and unilateral actions by Pristina that undermine the Dialogue and negatively impact the daily lives of Kosovo Serbs.

I wish to reiterate our full and steadfast support to Serbia’s EU accession process as well as to congratulate you for submitting an ambitious Reform Agenda in the framework of the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. Serbia’s European perspective stems from the strong belief that the European perspective of the Western Balkans is the only viable way for the sake of enhanced peace, long term stability and prosperity in the region.

Your Excellency,

Once again, I assure you that my Government will support you in carrying out your new responsibilities. Please extend my warm greetings and best wishes for enduring friendship between Cyprus and Serbia to the President of Serbia, His Excellency Mr. Aleksandar Vučić, and to the Serbian Prime Minister, His Excellency Mr. Miloš Vučević.

Ambassador Bošković-Prodanović, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus.
