Address by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the ceremony for receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr Willem Wouter Plomp

Your Excellency,

It is with sincere pleasure that I receive your Letters of Credence, appointing you as the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Cyprus. I wish to express my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for every success in the exercise of your important duties, while assuring you that both myself and my Government will provide you with every assistance necessary so that your tenure will be highly constructive and fruitful.

Your Excellency,

We are particularly pleased for the fact that a strong bond has been formed between our two countries over the years. Cyprus attaches great importance to our shared values that form an integral part of the bond between Cyprus and the Netherlands; our unwavering respect and support of international law, democracy and peace. Bilaterally and multilaterally, over the last years we have made important strides in our cooperation. From education to defense and security, Cyprus and the Netherlands are working together to better the lives of our peoples and promote stability and security to our continent and beyond.

Nonetheless, our world is shaken by a series of challenges, such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the renewed conflict in the Middle East. We need to make sure that international cooperation between like-minded countries continues in order to address these challenges.

At this point, I wish to highlight that 2024 marks a somber anniversary, a milestone commemoration for both Cyprus and Europe. It marks the completion of fifty years since the illegal Turkish invasion and the ongoing military occupation of almost 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. As I stressed since the first day I assumed office, my absolute priority is to work towards lasting peace in Cyprus, to break the current deadlock so that negotiations can restart with the aim to reunify Cyprus on the basis of relevant UNSC resolutions and EU law. My aim is to finally render Cyprus a normal, functional state, laying the foundations for peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding.

Your Excellency,

I assure you that my Government will stand by your side, supporting you in the performance of your important tasks. Please convey to H.M. King Willem-Alexander my heartiest greetings and to the people of the Netherlands warm wishes for enduring friendship.

Ambassador Wouter Plomp, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus.
