Address by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, at the ceremony for receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Finland, Ms Päivi Peltokoski

Your Excellency,

It is a great pleasure to receive your Letters of Credence, appointing you as the new Ambassador of the Republic of Finland to the Republic of Cyprus. I wish to express my sincere congratulations for your appointment as well as to wish you every success in the exercise of your new duties. I assure you that both myself and my Government will provide any necessary assistance to further the bilateral relations of our two countries.

Your Excellency,

Despite the geographical distance, Cyprus and Finland share common values and challenges that form a solid basis for cooperation. Our mutual respect of international law and steadfast commitment to democracy, peace and stability constitute the firm foundation for our bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including within our joint European family. We stand ready to continue working towards expanding our cooperation in a multitude of areas, such as education and culture, tourism, trade, and energy.

Living in a world that faces recurring crises, we strive to meet our citizens’ demand for safety and stability. Faced with two wars in the European continent and its vicinity, like-minded countries need to continue working together with a view to reaching effective and practical solutions, based on fundamental democratic principles and respect of international law and human rights.

Fifty years since the illegal Turkish invasion of 1974, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus remains fully committed to a comprehensive and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, based on relevant UNSC Resolutions and EU law and values, for the benefit of all Cypriots. Together with the international community, we unequivocally condemn the Turkish side’s position for a two-state solution. My aim is to finally render Cyprus a normal, functional state, laying the foundations for peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding.

Your Excellency,

Once more, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus and assure you of the support of both myself and my Government to your valuable mission, so that your tenure will be highly substantive and fruitful.

Ambassador Peltokoski, I warmly welcome you to Cyprus.
