Working visit of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Bucharest

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Minas Hadjimichael, held today, in Bucharest, political consultations with the Secretary of State, responsible for Bilateral and Strategic Relations in the Euro-Atlantic Area, Mr George Ciamba. They discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as issues high on the EU agenda, in view of the upcoming Presidency of the EU Council by Romania in the first half of 2019.

The Romanian Presidency priorities were presented, including the prospect of accession for the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership. The two exchanged views on the need for collective action in dealing with challenges, such as increased refugee and migratory flows to Europe and EU-Turkey relations. They also discussed issues of international concern, such as the Syrian crisis and the energy security of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean in particular. The Permanent Secretary also informed about the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus problem.

The Permanent Secretary was received by Romanian Foreign Minister, Mr Teodor Viorel Meleșcanu, to whom he conveyed the greetings of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, also assuring him of Cyprus' readiness to cooperate with Romania for the successful outcome of its Presidency.

The Permanent Secretary also met with State Secretary for Energy, Mr Doru Vişan, with whom he signed, on behalf of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, a Memorandum of Understanding between Cyprus and Romania in the field of energy. The Memorandum sets out the framework for cooperation between the two countries, also stating their desire to cooperate in order to support and promote sustainable energy policies in line with the EU climate and energy policy.

The Permanent Secretary was accompanied by the Ambassador of Cyprus in Bucharest Dimitris Hatziargyrou and the Director of the Permanent Secretary’s Office, Mrs Melivia Demetriou.
