The President of the Republic of Cyprus met with the President of the Republic of Lebanon
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, held a meeting today, 10th January 2025, with the newly elected President of the Republic of Lebanon, Mr Joseph Aoun, in Beirut.
After their meeting, President Christodoulides made the following statement:
“Lebanon is the closest neighbour of Cyprus. So, I decided that I have to be here today not only to congratulate President Aoun, but to convey our readiness to stand by the Lebanese people, by the Lebanese government and do what we have to do for the integrity, the prosperity of the Lebanese people.
Before coming here, I was on the phone with President Macron and the President of the European Commission, and I extend an invitation to President Aoun to be with us in Brussels with all the European Union (EU) leaders – the 27 leaders, the President of the Commission, the President of the Council – in order to present his vision for Lebanon, for the region. And we will start working on a comprehensive and strategic agreement of the EU with Lebanon, the same that we did with Egypt and Jordan.
At the same time, Cyprus will assume the presidency of the European Union on 1st January 2026, and we will work in order to substantially enhance the strategic partnership between the EU and Lebanon. So, I wanted to be the first leader to visit President Aoun and show, not in words but in action, that Cyprus stands by Lebanon and the Lebanese people. Thank you very much”.
