Address by the Minister of Health, Mr Michael Damianos, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, at the Pantheo Eye Centre Congress

It is both an honour and a privilege for me to address this esteemed gathering of professionals dedicated to the field of ophthalmology. I hereby acknowledge the important role of the Pantheo Eye Centre which serves as an invaluable platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and innovation in the field of ophthalmology.

Through expert speakers and a diverse range of topics, this congress promises to facilitate valuable exchange of knowledge, skills and experience between colleagues from home and abroad.

Vision is one of our most precious senses, and the importance of ophthalmic health cannot be overstated. The impact of eye diseases on individuals, families, and communities is profound, affecting not only quality of life but also economic productivity and overall public health. Ensuring accessible, high-quality eye care remains a top priority for our healthcare system.

In recent years, significant advancements have been made in ophthalmology, from groundbreaking research in retinal disease and corneal transplants to the development of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence-assisted diagnostics and minimally invasive surgical techniques. It is imperative that we harness these innovations to improve patient outcomes, enhance early detection, and expand treatment options.

Furthermore, we must remain committed to addressing the growing burden of preventable blindness. Conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy continue to challenge our healthcare systems, particularly in underserved communities. This is why we are dedicated to strengthening national eye care programs, expanding screening initiatives, and investing in training and capacity-building for ophthalmologists and allied health professionals.

International collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches are key to advancing eye health. By fostering partnerships between institutions, governments, and the private sector, we can collectively work towards solutions that benefit patients worldwide. I commend this congress for serving as a beacon of excellence in this regard, bringing together leading minds to discuss research findings, share best practices, and explore innovative treatment modalities.

As we look towards the future, the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring equitable access to eye care for all. Let us continue to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and medical innovation, and above all, let us never lose sight of the profound impact your work has on improving lives.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Professor Theodoros Potamitis Director of the Pantheo Eye Centre, to the Cyprus Ophthalmological Society, the Midland Ophthalmological Society and to all the organizers, speakers, and participants of this congress. I wish you all a productive and insightful meeting and look forward to the advancements that will emerge from your discussions.
