Statement to the Press by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, on the occasion of the trilateral meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Jordan and Greece
I would like to welcome my dear colleagues Ayman and George, and their accompanying delegations, to Cyprus. It is a great pleasure for me to host our first trilateral meeting at Foreign Ministers level in Nicosia. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the constructive discussions we have had that led to the adoption of the Joint Statement.
Our meeting today reflects the importance we all attach to our evolving trilateral cooperation and our commitment to work together to jointly address the challenges of our region.
We share the understanding that our cooperation contributes to our common goal of promoting peace, security, stability and prosperity in our region.
We will continue to work together, on the basis of a positive agenda, to achieve concrete results, which will ultimately benefit our countries, our societies and the wider region.
Today, we had the opportunity to discuss the progress achieved in our trilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields endorsed by the Leaders during the first Trilateral Summit, in January 2018, and to prepare for the next Summit in Jordan, in the first half of 2019.
We also exchanged views on the future of our trilateral cooperation in order to ensure that both the potential and momentum are fully exploited and developed.
We agreed that the establishment of a Permanent Secretariat would best serve the realization of our common objective of improving the effectiveness and coordination of our trilateral mechanism. We will discuss this in further detail and we will present it at the forthcoming Summit.
Furthermore, we engaged in a thorough exchange of views on a number of regional and international issues, including the stalemate in the Middle East Peace Process, the developments in Syria, migration, combating terrorism and security, including energy security.
I also had the opportunity to brief my colleagues on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem. I would like, once again, to express our deep appreciation for Jordan’s principled stance and support on the Cyprus problem and reiterate also the sincere gratitude of the Cypriot people for the continuous support of Greece to our efforts.
Finally, we discussed EU-Jordan relations, particularly in light of the recent visit of His Majesty King Abdullah II to Brussels. Jordan is α vital partner for the EU. We will continue to actively advocate for the strengthening of EU-Jordan relations, including engaging more with Jordan on regional and foreign policy issues.
We will also continue to positively engage in global efforts to support Jordan in addressing the consequences of the refugee crisis and the heavy burden this continues to place on its economy, structures and society.
Dear colleagues,
Please allow me to welcome you once more to Cyprus.
Thank you.
