Statement by the Chargèe d’Affaires of Cyprus to the United Nations, Ms Polly Ioannou, at the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to the UNRWA

I can be very brief as the comments from colleagues in the room have fully covered the substantive points I wanted to make. I would like to echo, in particular, the overwhelming appreciation expressed here today regarding the vital role that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) plays in providing educational, health-care, relief and social services to millions of Palestine refugees, whose status under international law is clear and should not be put into question.

I would also like to add my voice to those who have emphasized the importance of finding a lasting two-state solution as soon as possible, in the interest of peace and regional stability and as a means of definitively addressing the question of refugees.

Finally, Mme President, I wish to announce that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus has decided to donate the amount of 100,000 Euro as a symbolic contribution towards the crucial humanitarian work carried out by the Agency. Before closing, allow me to extend my country’s gratitude to countries hosting Palestine refugees, as well as to UNRWA staff.
