6,7% increase of employment in the industrial sector in 2017
According to the results of the Survey on Industrial Production 2017, employment in the broad industrial sector increased by 6,7% in 2017, reaching 35,7 thousands compared to 33,5 thousands in 2016. In manufacturing employment it reached 31,5 thousands, in mining and quarrying 0,5 thousands, in electricity supply 2,1 thousands and in water supply, sewerage and waste management 1,7 thousand persons.
In the whole of the industrial sector, production value at current prices recorded an increase of 12,8% rising to €4.165,5 million in 2017 compared to €3.691,7 million in 2016. In manufacturing, production value increased by 12,0% rising to €3.074,0 million, in electricity supply increased by 14,9% rising to €702,5 million, in mining and quarrying by 55,1% rising to €77,3 million and in water supply, sewerage and waste management by 9,5% rising to €311,7 million.
Value added at current prices rose by 7,4% in the total of industry and reached €1.554,8 million in 2017 compared to €1.448,3 million in 2016. In manufacturing, value added increased by 11,8% reaching €1.101,5 million and in water supply, sewerage and waste management by 4,1% reaching €150,1 million. On the contrary, in mining and quarrying value added decreased by 2,5% falling to €18,9 million and in electricity supply by 5,1% falling to €284,2 million.
Methodological information
Definitions
Employment – The average number of all persons employed during the year, in full-time equivalent units.
Production value - The value of goods produced, services rendered to others, net receipts from the sale of goods sold in the same condition as purchased, other income and changes in the value of work-in-progress at the end of the year.
Value added - Derived by deducting from the production value the aggregate costs of all materials used, other production expenses, administrative expenses and rents paid for buildings and machinery.
Coverage and collection of data
The Industrial Production Survey covers a sample of around 1.500 enterprises with main activity falling under sections B, C, D and E of the classification system of economic activities NACE Rev. 2 of the European Union.
The collection of data from the Statistical Service is performed through personal interviews with the use of a special questionnaire.
