It is indeed a great pleasure to joint you at the opening reception of “Maritime Cyprus 2019”. An event which proudly celebrates 30 years since it was first held in 1989, demonstrating that it has been firmly established as one of the most international shipping events, as aptly demonstrated by the numerous presence of distinguished personalities of the maritime and shipping industry, among them His Excellency the President of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

And taking this opportunity, please allow me to extend a warm welcome to the distinguished delegates of the international maritime and shipping industry for their presence tonight, which, yet again, reaffirms the trust and respect that Cyprus’ maritime and shipping sector enjoys.

I have no doubt that during the fruitful deliberations which are to follow the next few days, you will identify a number of new joint entrepreneurial and business initiatives, as well as new areas for future co-operation.

In this respect, I wish to assure of my Government’s unwavering support in facilitating and actively supporting investment initiatives that contribute towards sustainable economic growth.

Before concluding, I would like to congratulate Safebulkers for rightfully receiving the “Cyprus Maritime Award 2019” and express my sincere appreciation to my dear friend, Polys Hajioannou, for the invaluable support and contribution to the Cyprus Flag, the shipping industry and the economy of Cyprus.

A support, evident, amongst others, by the decision to establish in Cyprus the ship management company Safebulkers so as to provide exclusive management services to Safe Bulkers Inc., a New York Stock Exchange listed company since 2008, which is the largest Owner by deadweight of the Cyprus flag registry.

I have no doubt that, based on the professionalism of Mr Hajioannou and his associates, Safebulkers will enjoy even more successes in the years to come.
