The President of the House of Representatives addressed a symbolic tree planting ceremony

The President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Syllouris, and the High Commissioner of India, Ms Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, attended today, Thursday 20 August 2020, the planting of a sapling on the occasion of the Independence Day of India and the 60th anniversary of the House of Representatives, at the House of the Citizen.

Mr Syllouris said that "this symbolic tree planting ceremony serves to highlight and mark two auspicious occasions. The 74th Independence Day of India and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the House of Representatives, following the independence of the Republic of Cyprus from British colonial rule.

The parallel fate and course of Cyprus and India through the years is evident and has contributed to forging strong and friendly ties. Ties that have been shaped through a similar history of colonialism and struggle for freedom and independence and are based on mutual respect and commitment to democratic ideals and values, covering a broad spectrum of relations and exchanges.

As I congratulate you on your 74th independence anniversary, I can assure you that we will continue on the same path. Our close and friendly bonds shall continue to grow and flourish on the fertile ground we have sowed, as will this modest olive tree sapling, that we are planting today. An ancient symbol of peace and friendship, uniquely linked to Cyprus, as it graces our national flag, our choice of tree could not be more fitting. As we nurture and protect this tree to grow deep roots and sprout strong brunches, we shall continue to nurture and protect the valued friendship of our two nations, to the benefit of both our great countries and peoples".
