It is with great pleasure that I have accepted the invitation to address this online reception on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. I should like to extend, on behalf of all Members of the Cyprus House of Representatives and on my own behalf, our warmest congratulations.

October 1st coincides with Cyprus Independence Day, a landmark date in the history of our two countries, which are linked by common principles and values, solidarity, mutual respect and support for issues of major concern to each country.

The principle of “one China - one Cyprus” underpins the framework of our relations, our mutual understanding of respective national interests and our shared views on many international and regional issues.

Cyprus and its people deeply appreciate the principled stance and unwavering support of China, a permanent Member of the UN Security Council, in our struggle to achieve a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, in accordance with international law and pertinent UN Resolutions.

The year 2021 is another milestone in the course of relations and cooperation between our two countries, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the People’s Republic of China.

On the parliamentary level in particular, the Memorandum of Understanding, signed between the House of Representatives and the National People’s Congress in December 2018, set the framework for enhanced cooperation to the mutual benefit of our two countries and peoples. The House of Representatives and I, personally, have the sincere will and intention to work in this direction. I cannot fail to point out the excellent cooperation that has been developed between the Cyprus Parliament and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Cyprus. 

China is a prominent actor in world affairs and a valuable strategic partner for the European Union. As an EU Member State, Cyprus encourages dialogue and cooperation between the Union and China on issues of mutual interest and in addressing global challenges, with the aim of achieving global peace, stability and prosperity. In this respect, Cyprus wishes to see China-EU partnership develop to the fullest possible extend.

The Belt and Road Initiative can become instrumental and mutually beneficial in our strategic partnership in a multitude of fields, in compliance with market rules and international norms. In this context, I wish to congratulate China for launching the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development aspiring to actively improve global governance and significantly contribute in efforts to address serious global challenges, such as the ongoing pandemic crisis and climate emergency.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Global challenges and threats require global solutions and enhanced multilateralism. China’s prominent role in international affairs can pave the way for a more resilient and sustainable post-pandemic world based on greater solidarity and outreach to those most in need.

On the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, I wish to convey on behalf of the Cyprus House of Representatives a sincere message of friendship and solidarity and my warmest wishes for progress and prosperity to the leadership and the friendly people of China.
