The Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Costas Kadis, pays an official visit to Georgia

The Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Costas Kadis, and the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mr Mikhail Chkhenkeli, signed yesterday, 12 February 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the fields of Education and Science. The signature took place in the Georgian Capital Tbilisi, where Mr Kadis is on official visit, following the invitation of his Georgian counterpart. The MoU will strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in the field of education and will provide opportunities for mobility and exchange of students, researchers and academic personnel. The MoU is also expected to contribute towards the aim of the Government to establish Cyprus as an international educational and research center.

Our Government, Mr Kadis said, focuses on ensuring quality in education and for this reason the Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education was established, in order to provide a healthy and reliable Higher Education system and to increase foreign students’ interest to study in Cyprus. Mr Kadis explained also that all recognized public and private Universities in Cyprus operate under the effective control of the laws and regulations of the Cyprus Government, ensuring quality in education and excellence in teaching. “The fact that Cyprus is a member of the EU and a recognized business centre, is seriously taken into consideration by foreign academics and students”, the Minister noted.

The two Ministers decided to start the negotiations for the signature of Agreement of Mutual Academic Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications. They also agreed that Cyprus will provide expertise in the area of quality assurance and accreditation in Higher Education and that cooperation will be developed between the two countries in the field of education for the environment and sustainable development. Mr Kadis invited his Georgian counterpart to visit Cyprus.

During his visit, the Minister of Education and Culture visited the Tbilisi State University, where he discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation with Universities in Cyprus. This initiative was warmly welcomed by Georgian academics who are looking forward to enable mobility of students, academics and researchers and co-operating in European and other programs.

Mr Kadis also visited the Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the Tbilisi State University. “It is a great pleasure and honor to be with you and have the opportunity to appreciate the important work you are doing to promote Greek culture” Mr Kadis said. He also congratulated the academic personnel for their valuable and multifaceted work and assured them of the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
