Curriculum vitae of the newly-appointed Minister of Education and Culture, Μr Kostas Champiaouris

Kostas Champiaouris assumed office as Minister of Education and Culture on March 1, 2018.

He was born in the village of Emba, in the district of Pafos, in 1963. He graduated from the 9th Gymnasium of Limassol and later served in the Cyprus National Guard.

He studied at the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus and at the Pedagogical Department of Primary Education of the University of Athens. Mr Champiaouris received an MA in Teaching Mathematics from the University of Cyprus and an MA in Education from the University of Bath (UK). He continued his studies at the Pedagogical Department of Primary Education of the University of Athens and received a PhD in Education. He was also a Fulbright scholar at the University of Connecticut, USA where he attended an intensive course on ICT in Education.

Prior to his appointment as Minister of Education and Culture, he served in Primary Education for 32 years. His professional career began as a teacher; he subsequently assumed the roles of Deputy Headteacher, Headteacher, Inspector and, more recently, Chief Education Officer. As Chief Education Officer he served as the Head of the Ministry of Education and Culture’s European Funds Management Unit.

He also served as Chair of the Limassol District Committee of Special Education, Chair of the Interdepartmental Committee on Mathematics and represented the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Permanent Secretary on the Governing Board of the "G. N. Kalogeropoulos Foundation". In August 2015 he was appointed by the Council of Ministers as President of the Governing Board of the St Varnavas School for the Blind.

Mr Champiaouris has worked as a visiting lecturer at various Universities. He is a founding member of the Cyprus Scientific Association of Teachers Using Information and Communication Technologies. He contributed to the organisation of several conferences and the implementation of various research programmes. He attended numerous conferences and participated in European projects both in Cyprus and abroad. He is the author of several academic articles.

Kostas Champiaouris is married to Eleni Tziaouri-Champiaouri and they have two children, Joanna and Nikolas.
