Written statement by the Government Spokesman, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis, on the telephone conversation between the President of the Republic and the United Nations Secretary-General

The President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, had a telephone conversation with the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), Mr António Guterres, late this afternoon.

During the conversation, the President of the Republic, after thanking the UNSG for his efforts for the resumption of the talks, as well as for his stated commitment to the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework, stressed the need to appoint an envoy as soon as possible to explore the prospects for the resumption of the talks, underlining the need for the whole process to take place as soon as possible.

The President of the Republic also pointed out that any objections raised about the non-appointment of an envoy have no substance and should not hinder such a development.

Furthermore, President Christodoulides expressed the need for the immediate implementation of what has been agreed on Pyla and the implementation of all the provisions of the agreed Consensus with the UN peacekeeping force.

Regarding the efforts to create a sea corridor for the unhindered provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the President of the Republic, following the letter he sent to the UNSG, dated 7th November 2023, and the relevant discussions he had in Paris with the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Mr Philippe Lazzarini, briefed the UNSG on the technical consultations on the issue and in particular on the outcome of the meetings at technical level between Cyprus and Israel.

Finally, President Christodoulides briefed the UNSG on the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to host in Cyprus a regional operational centre for the coordination of the international community's actions in relation to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
