Total Employment: 54.697

In February 2024 total government employment reached 54.697 persons. In Civil Service 23.161 persons were employed, in Educational Service 17.575 persons and in Security Forces 13.961 persons. 

In Civil Service there were 11.953 permanent personnel, 4.275 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1.245 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5.688 hourly paid workers. The highest percentage of employees in Civil Service was the permanent personnel (51,6%) and the lowest were the employees with contracts of definite duration (5,4%).

In Educational Service there were 11.888 permanent personnel, 1.186 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4.360 employees with contracts of definite duration and 141 hourly paid workers. The highest percentage of employees in Educational Service was the permanent personnel (67,6%) and the lowest were the hourly paid workers (0,8%).

In Special Forces there were 8.209 permanent personnel, 4.726 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 300 employees with contracts of definite duration and 726 hourly paid workers. The highest percentage of employees in Special Forces was the permanent personnel (58,8%) and the lowest were the employees with contracts of definite duration (2,1%).

Note: As from January 2024 the classification for permanent and casual staff is discontinued. CYSTAT has adjusted the structure of government personnel to permanent, employees with contracts of indefinite duration, employees with contracts of definite duration and hourly paid workers. Data for January 2024 have been revised.

Methodological Information

Coverage

Government employment includes the Civil Service, Educational Service and Security Forces staff. Civil Service includes employees of the Ministries, Departments and Services. Educational Service includes the employees of school units and the staff of the Cyprus Productivity Centre and the Higher Hotel Institute of Cyprus. Security Forces include the Police Service, Fire Service and the National Guard staff. In all three categories the employees are classified in permanent personnel, employees with contracts of indefinite and definite duration and hourly paid workers (regular, casual and seasonal staff).

The members of the House of Representatives are not included in the data.

Collection of Data

Data concerning Government employment is provided by the Treasury of the Republic and refers to the number of persons that were paid in the current month, irrespective of the period and duration of employment.
