Elections 2024 – Statement by the Chief Returning Officer, Dr Elikkos A. Elia, on voter turnout until 5 p.m.

Voting is running smoothly and the turnout at local polling stations continues.

I would like to thank the voters for their exemplary behaviour, the presiding officers and the polling assistants at the polling stations as well as the staff of the political parties and the independent candidates for their cooperation. I would also like to thank the secretariats of the Elections Officers, the Chief Police Officer and the Cyprus Police members for their professionalism in performing their duties, as well as the media for their cooperation and their contribution to the accurate and objective information of the public on electoral issues.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank my colleagues at the Ministry of Interior, who have been working tirelessly throughout this period, the Press and Information Office, the Department of Information Technology Services of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, as well as the Elections’ Officers.

Voting will be completed within half an hour. I urge voters who have not yet exercised their right to vote to proceed to the polling stations before 6 p.m. and exercise their right.  

Until 5 p.m., a total of 319,007 persons have voted, which corresponds to 45.6% of the total registered voters.

At the corresponding time of the 2019 European Parliament Elections, 38.5% voted, whilst in the 2016 Local Government Elections, 54.2% had voted.

5,254 Turkish Cypriots voted at the dedicated polling stations, while 313,753 voters voted at the polling stations.

Voting is expected to be completed at 6 p.m., Cyprus time, at all polling stations operating both in the Republic of Cyprus and abroad.
