Remarks by the President of the Republic of Cyprus concerning statements by Hezbollah

The Republic of Cyprus is not involved in any way in the war conflicts, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Nikos Christodoulides stated tonight, noting that the Republic of Cyprus is part of the solution and not part of the problem.

In his remarks to reporters, and invited to comment on threatening statements by Hezbollah's leader in Lebanon, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, against Cyprus, President Christodoulides noted: “I have read the remarks made. My answer is that the Republic of Cyprus is not involved in the war conflicts in any way.

The Republic of Cyprus is not part of the problem, the Republic of Cyprus is part of the solution. And our role, as manifested, for example, through the humanitarian corridor (to Gaza), is being recognised not only by the Arab world, but by the entire international community.

I therefore reiterate that Cyprus, our country, is absolutely not involved in any way, and is not part of the problem. To the contrary, we demonstrate in practice that we are part of the solution.”

Replying to a question whether there is still a communication channel with either Hezbollah or the Government of Lebanon, the President of the Republic stated: “Undoubtedly, there is a communication channel with both the Government of Lebanon and the Government in Iran. There are channels of communication through the diplomatic route.”

Asked if he is worried about the remarks by Nasrallah, the President of the Republic of Cyprus said: “The statements are not pleasant, but they do not correspond in any way to what is alleged, that is, to present the image that Cyprus is involved in the war activities. That is not the case at all.”

Replying to a question whether he will have any communication with foreign leaders about these positions expressed by Hezbollah's leader Nasrallah, the President of the Republic of Cyprus said: “Certainly, through the diplomatic route. However, I repeat that any actions by the Republic of Cyprus are made openly and not in secret. The Republic of Cyprus is part of the solution and not part of the problem.”
