Press release by the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Works regarding the DG REFORM & European Investment Bank Joint Event for the Launch of SUMP Projects in Cyprus

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance hosted a joint event organised by DG REFORM and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to officially launch the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) projects in Lemesos and Larnaca. These projects, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) for Cyprus, aim to improve urban mobility and contribute to Cyprus's green transition.

During the event, the Director of the Public Works Department, Mr Eleftherios Eleftheriou, delivered opening remarks, emphasising the crucial role of the SUMP projects in enhancing urban development and promoting a more sustainable transport system in Cyprus. The Director highlighted how these initiatives align with the country’s vision for green urbanisation and improved mobility solutions for all citizens.

Following the opening remarks, the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, Mr Alexis Vafeades, provided welcome addresses that outlined Cyprus's strategic vision for sustainable mobility. Mr Vafeades spoke about the importance of these projects in reducing carbon emissions and meeting the ambitious targets set forth under the EU’s “Fit for 55” initiative. He reiterated the government's commitment to fostering a greener future for Cyprus.

The Permanent Secretary of the Directorate General Growth, Ministry of Finance, Mr Andreas Zachariades, delivered a message on behalf of the Minister of Finance. He discussed the financial support and investment in the SUMP projects, highlighting the significant role of the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the European Investment Bank in facilitating these vital initiatives. Mr Zachariades underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving successful outcomes.

The Vice-President of the EIB, Mr Kyriakos Kakouris, shared insights into the EIB’s role in supporting urban mobility projects in Cyprus. He elaborated on the bank’s commitment to financing sustainable infrastructure development and the specific contributions that the EIB is making toward the implementation of the urban mobility and accessibility designs in Limassol and Larnaca.

Mrs Judit Rozsa, Acting Director General of Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support of the European Commission (DG REFORM), highlighted the technical assistance provided by DG REFORM to Cyprus and other EU member states. She spoke about the importance of collaborative efforts in implementing sustainable mobility solutions and emphasised the role of DG REFORM in facilitating knowledge transfer and best practices across the EU.

Mr Marios Theophilou, speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Directorate General for Growth, presented the RRF initiative, titled “Cyprus Tomorrow”. He discussed the decoupling of the Cyprus Economic Model from fossil fuels as part of the Cyprus green transition plan, stressing the need for innovative approaches to foster sustainable economic growth.

Mrs Evie Anayiotou, Head of the Sustainable Mobility Section at the Public Works Department, provided a detailed presentation on the implementation of the SUMP projects in Lemesos and Larnaca. She focused on the “Early Winners” projects, outlining key milestones, expected outcomes, and the positive impacts these initiatives will have on urban mobility in both cities.

Finally, Mayor of Larnaca, Mr Andreas Vyras, presented the Larnaca 2030 vision, emphasising the critical role of SUMP projects in shaping the future of Larnaca. He shared insights into the city’s plans for sustainable urban development and the importance of community engagement in realising this vision.

The event showcased how Cyprus has been utilising EU support and investment to transform its urban infrastructure, aiming to promote sustainable, accessible, and green mobility for its citizens.
