Address by Minister of Transport, Mrs Vassiliki Anastassiadou, at the event hosted on the occasion of the double celebration of the 58th National Day and of the 28th Liberation Day of the State of Kuwait
I am delighted to join you this evening for this double celebration of the 58th National Day and the 28th Liberation Day of the State of Kuwait. It is both an honour and a pleasure to convey, on behalf of the President and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, warmest congratulations and sincerest best wishes.
Since gaining its independence in 1961, Kuwait has stood as a shining example to the world community and to smaller countries in particular, of what can be achieved by abiding to the principles of good neighbourly relations, in pursuit of peace and stability. Kuwait is a moderating force of stability, a fact widely recognised and highly appreciated.
Cyprus supports Kuwait’s important role in promoting regional security and stability, such as its active support of the international coalition against terrorism, but also in its efforts to bring the conflicting sides together in Yemen and hosting humanitarian conferences in aid of Syria, to name a few.
On the bilateral front, we have seen our relations go from strength to strength. It is my sincere belief that the MFA’s recent visit to Kuwait, accompanied by a sizeable business delegation, has added to the already existing solid foundations for the further strengthening of our cooperation in all fields, especially at the political and economic levels. The Minister was most pleased that during his meeting with the Kuwaiti Minister οf Foreign Affairs, the new Air Services Agreement was signed, which will pave the way for direct air connectivity between Kuwait and Cyprus bringing our people even closer. We look forward to exploring new avenues of cooperation both bilaterally and in international fora.
As such, Cyprus and Kuwait, as two UN-minded countries, also understand the importance of the primacy of international law in our global system, having both suffered from flagrant violations of international law. Cyprus deeply appreciates Kuwait’s support to our committed efforts to reach a viable and comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, in line with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. A solution that will end the ongoing Turkish occupation and reunite the island and its people, restore and safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots.
Your Excellency, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
On this celebratory occasion, let me express my heartfelt congratulations to His Highness and reiterate the wishes for the continued prosperity of the State of Kuwait, the Kuwaiti people and the further strengthening of Cypriot – Kuwaiti relations.
