Address by the President of the House of Representatives Mr. Demetris Syllouris to the opening of the exhibition on the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi
I feel particularly honoured to be opening today this exhibition on the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, alongside H.E. the High Commissioner of India to Cyprus and a good friend, Mrs. Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat. I also wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the High Commissioner for her tireless efforts in strengthening even further the already close ties that our countries share.
The active engagement of citizens in democratic processes is an apt manifestation of the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in contemporary society and in this respect, it is particularly relevant that we are hosting this exhibition here, at the House of the Citizen. This is a landmark building in Nicosia, restored and inaugurated just a few months ago, with the aim of facilitating and enhancing interactive communication between the Parliament and civil society.
This exhibition provides us with a great opportunity to explore further the life and deeds of this emblematic leader who has taught the world that, through mutual respect, open mindedness, compassion, understanding and dialogue, one may confront any challenge and overcome any predicament.
Especially today, that we are called to deal with multiple challenges, we need more than ever before a beacon of hope and inspiration. In our turbulent world, the example set by the life and wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi shows the way forward for humanity.
