UNSG’s Deputy Spokesman replied to a question by the Press on Cyprus
During yesterday’s (13/2/2018) regular press briefing at UN headquarters in New York, the Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Mr Stéphane Dujarric, replied to questions with regards to Turkey’s illegal actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.
The text reads as follows:
"Question: Stéphane, I’m sure you know what happened on Friday in the Mediterranean Sea. Once again Turkey showed its ugly side and stopped the drilling by the Italian Company ENI in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus. As you know it’s an illegal act. I wanted to know how the Secretary-General reacted and if Mr Guterres called Mr. Erdogan? Thank you.
Stéphane Dujarric: I’m not aware of any direct contacts, if they were any, between the Secretary-General and the President of Turkey. Let me, I’ll have to get back to you on this specific reaction to this event.
Question: May I ask you something else?
Stéphane Dujarric: Yes, of course.
Question: You know, Mr. Guterres issues statements every day for the smallest problem of the world. It’s amazing that he never issued any statement concerning Turkey, and I don’t understand. Mr. Erdogan threatened today Cyprus with war. Can you ask the Secretary-General if he worries about it…
Stéphane Dujarric: The Secretary-General issues statements on various issues and let me get back to you on this specific case."
