The President of the Republic received the Special Representative of the UNSG in Cyprus

The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, received today, at the Presidential Palace, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General in Cyprus, Mrs Elizabeth Spehar.

After the meeting Mrs Spehar told reporters that “it was very good meeting. I was very pleased to be able to meet with Mr Anastasiades for the first time in a while in order to congratulate him on his reelection.

I am here of course at his request and we had a very good conversation I believe.

I was here principally to listen to him, he expressed his concerns in respect to what is happening with the hydrocarbons issue. These are concerns that we understand and which we are conveying to New York.

We also discussed the issue of the reflection period that has been going on since Crans Montana, after the closing of the Conference on Cyprus. You might recall that the Secretary General had recommended that all of the parties reflect after Crans Montana to see how a meaningful results oriented process might resume. So we had some preliminary discussions about that, and I did reassure the President that we remain available for undertaking the good offices of the Secretary General.”

Replying to a question, Mrs Spehar said that she will also meet with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Asked if she discussed with the President the issue regarding the tension in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus, Mrs Spehar said “yes, we discussed that.”
