Address by the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Syllouris, on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi
It is a particular honour for me to pay tribute to one of the most enlightened personalities of our times, the influential political leader, the dedicated activist, the inspired thinker and writer, that was Mahatma Gandhi. Today, on the occasion of the anniversary of his birth and the celebration of the International Day of Non – Violence, we should all take time to contemplate on the values and ideals that shaped Gandhi’s life and were turned into practice and, thus, into his legacy to the world and us all.
India and Cyprus, our two countries, are bound by long standing close and friendly ties. Through the fight to free ourselves from colonial control and gain independence and freedom to our ongoing struggle for peace and prosperity, the agonies of our two countries have run in parallel over the years. The long course of our ties through history, culture and common struggles translates into cooperation and mutual support on a multitude of levels. This message was conveyed all the more clearly during the very recent official visit to Cyprus and particularly to the House of Representatives of the President of the Republic of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, barely a month ago.
Our presence here today reflects our enduring commitment to Mahatma Gandhi’s inspirational legacy. His life and deeds have taught the world that, through mutual respect, an open mind, compassion, understanding and dialogue, one may confront any challenge and overcome any predicament.
In celebrating his birth, no tribute can be more fitting than our renewed commitment to the values and principles which he preached and struggled for, with the hope that these shall prevail and world peace and prosperity shall finally become a reality for all.
Thank you.
